Self-defined as a "minimalist rock trio", Shellac is known as Steve Albini's group, a producer known mainly in the alternative rock scene for his work with artists such as Pixies, Nirvana, Breeders, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Helmet, Mogwai, PJ Harvey, Manic Street Preachers, Superchunk, Mclusky, Cloud Nothings, among others. Before Shellac, Albini was also a member of the bands Big Black and Rapeman.

With Bob Weston (bass, vocals) and Todd Trainer (drums, vocals), Steve Albini (guitar, vocals) formed the band in 1992. The group released the albums At Action Park (1994), The Futurist (1997), Terraform (1998), 1000 Hurts (2000), Excellent Italian Greyhound (2007) and Dude Incredible (2014)

Albini died of a heart attack on May 7, 2024, ten days before the release of the band's sixth studio album, To All Trains.
