Originally formed by Tim Kasher (vocals/guitar), Matt Maginn (bass), Clint Schnase (drums) and Stephen Pederson (guitar) in 1995 in the American city of Omaha, Nebraska, Cursive established itself in the alternative scene with its music that combines elements of post-hardcore and indie rock.
The first album, Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes, was released in 1997, through the label Crank! Records. In 1998, the group broke up and soon released The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song, their second album, via Saddle Creek Records. However, this separation was short-lived. In 1999, the band returned with a new form, with Ted Stevens replacing Steve Pedersen.
In 2000, the band released Domestica, a concept album, which focuses on the conflicts in a couple's relationship. At the time, rumors suggested that Tim Kasher's divorce had been the expiration date for this album.
Cursive gained a member in 2001, cellist Gretta Cohn. Her first recording with the group was the EP Burst and Bloom, released in 2002. The Ugly Organ, released in 2003, was the group's most critically acclaimed album. Publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Billboard and Rolling Stone enthusiastically praised this fourth album by the band.
In 2005, Gretta Cohn left Cursive. The group subsequently released the album Happy Hollow (2006). In 2008, drummer Clint Schnase also left the lineup, later being replaced by Cully Symington. In 2009, the album Mama, I'm Swollen arrived and, in 2012, I Am Gemini, their seventh studio album.
Vitriola, the eighth album, was released in 2018, marking the return of drummer Clint Schnase to the band's lineup. The following year, Get Fixed was released, an album with songs recorded during the sessions for the previous album. A new work, titled Devourer, was released in 2024.
