The Shins' music is situated between folk and indie rock. Formed in 1997 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a project by singer/songwriter James Mercer, the American band was expanded with Jesse Sandoval [drums], Marty Crandall [keyboards] and Neal Langford [bass]. Previously, all of them, including James Mercer, were part of a band called Flake Music.
In 2001, through Sub Pop Records, the band released their first album, entitled Oh, Inverted World, which was well received by critics. However, it was with Chutes Too Narrow (2003) that the band gained prestige in the independent music scene.
During the recording of Chutes Too Narrow, Neal Langford left the band, being replaced by Dave Hernandez. Following this, in 2007, The Shins released their third album, Wincing the Night Away. Their fourth album only arrived in 2012, when the band released Port of Morrow. Its successor, Heartworms, was released in 2017.
