Formed in 2000 by three former members of Jonathan Fire*Eater - Walter Martin (keyboards), Matt Barrick (drummer) and Paul Maroon (guitar) - and two former members of The Recoys - Hamilton Leithauser (vocals) and Peter Bauer (bass), the band The Walkmen had a great impact with the self-titled EP, released in 2001.
Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone, the debut album, which came out in early 2002, is full of sound references. But it is easier to point out influences of Joy Division in the band's music. However, the band's music should not be heard by its influences. The group's music is full of elements that give the band its own identity. In 2004, the group released its second album, titled Bows+Arrows, through the Record Collection label.
The album A Hundred Miles Off, their third studio album, arrived in 2006. That same year, the band released the album Pussy Cats, a reinterpretation of the album by American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson, released in 1974 and produced by John Lennon.
In 2008, The Walkmen released the album You & Me. Lisbon, the group's sixth studio album, was released in 2010 by Fat Possum. In 2012, ten years after their debut album, the group released Heaven, an album well received by critics.
