Formed in New York in 2007 by Kip Berman (guitar, vocals), Alex Naidus (bass), Peggy Wang-East (keyboards, vocals) and Kurt Feldman (drums), the band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart features distorted guitars, soft vocals and pop melodies, in other words, the typical elements of shoegaze, an alternative rock genre that emerged in the late 1980s in the United Kingdom and whose greatest exponents include the bands The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.

Also in 2007, the band released their first EP, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, on the Painbow label. And in 2008, their self-titled debut album and the EP Higher Than the Stars arrived, both on the Slumberland label.

In 2010, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart released the single Say No to Love. The following year, their second album, Belong, was released. The third, Days of Abandon, was released in May 2014. The band returned with a new album in 2017, titled The Echo of Pleasure.

In 2019, Berman announced the dissolution of the band.
