Band formed in 1989 in the English city of Oxford by vocalists/guitarists Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Adi Vines and drummer Graham Bonner, Swervedriver emerged within the shoegaze scene, despite their music being characterized in a heavier sound than their gender contemporaries. Over time, the band also incorporated elements of classic rock and psychedelic rock into their work.
In 1991, the band released Raise, their first album. After this debut work, Graham Bonner and Adi Vines left the group. In their second complete work, Mezcal Head (1993), the band had a new member, drummer Jez Hindmarsh. And, in the sequence, it returned to being a quartet with the entry of bassist Steve George.
Still in the 1990s, Swervedriver released the albums Ejector Seat Reservation (1995) and 99th Dream (1998). Between 1999 and 2007, the band took a long break, returning to perform in 2008. A new studio album, I Wasn't Born to Lose You, was released in 2015, when the group had a new drummer, Mikey Jones, who replaces Jez Hindmarsh, who left the group in 2010. The band returned in 2019 with Future Ruins, sixth album.
