The Folk Implosion was created in the early 1990s as a side project bySebadoh frontman Lou Barlow in partnership with composer and librarian John Davis. His music's reference styles are lo-fi, electronic indie and trip hop.
The band's first recordings came out in 1993 on cassette tape under the title Walk Through This World with the Folk Implosion on the Communion label. The following year, their first album, Take a Look Inside, was released.
The Folk Implosion stopped being a typical obscure indie band in 1995, when director Larry Clark's film "Kids" came out. The band collaborated with several songs for the soundtrack of the feature film. The track “Natural One” entered the Billboard charts, becoming the band's biggest hit.
After the “Natural One” phenomenon, the band released the album Dare to Be Surprised (1997) and One Part Lullaby (1999), but without achieving commercial success. In 2000, Davis left the band and Barlow continued with the project, which released the album The New Folk Implosion in 2003.
Barlow and Davis returned in 2021 with The Folk Implosion for an acoustic performance and began working on new material, which spawned the EP Feel It If You Feel It (2022). In 2023, the band released Music for KIDS, a compilation of tracks released on the Kids film soundtrack and others that were not officially released.
A new studio album, Walk Thru Me, will arrive in 2024.
