Formed in Toronto, Canada, in 2004, Crystal Castles began as a solo project by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath. Kath then met singer Alice Glass and the two began working together.

The band's music is situated within the electronic indie genre, characterized by the use of sounds taken from old video games.

The duo's self-titled debut album was released in 2008 on Lies Records as a double album. Crystal Castles was included in NME's "Top 50 Greatest Albums of the Decade".

The duo returned in 2010 with a new album, which again bore only the band's name. Castles (II) was produced by Ethan Kath in a variety of different locations, including a church in Iceland and an abandoned convenience store garage in Detroit.

In 2012, the duo released their third album, (III). In October 2014, Alice Glass announced her departure from the band. With a new vocalist, Edith Frances, Crystal Castles released their fourth album, Amnesty (I), in August 2016.

In 2017, in a statement, Alice Glass accused Ethan Kath of sexual, physical and mental abuse during the time she worked with him. The accusations, denied by Kath, put a long hiatus in the band's activities.
