Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam, M.I.A., was born in London, England on July 17, 1977 but her family is from Sri Lanka. Singer, songwriter, fashion designer and political activist, M.I.A. began to gain notoriety in 2004, when she released, in partnership with her boyfriend, DJ Diplo, the album Piracy Funds Terrorism, with remixed songs, including tracks from funk carioca.
In 2005, M.I.A. released her first album, Arular. Highlight for the singles "Bucky Done Gun", "Sunshowers" and "Galang". Her next album, Kala, was released in 2007. Three years later, M.I.A. released the album MAYA. Her fourth album, Matangi, came out in 2013. Including collaborations with Diplo, Blaqstarr and Skrillex, her fifth album, AIM came out in 2016. Six years later, the singer released Mata.
