Hole

Hole was overshadowed by the controversial image of its frontwoman, Courtney Love. However, the band produced some of the best-known songs of American alternative rock in the 1990s. "Doll Parts", "Miss World", "Celebrity Skin", "Malibu" and "Violet" are some of the hits produced by the group.

The band was formed in 1989 in Los Angeles by Love, who recruited guitarist Eric Erlandson through a newspaper ad. Love had already played in several bands, including the early lineups of Babes in Toyland and Faith No More.

Adding bassist Jill Emery and drummer Caroline Rue, the band released their first album in 1991. Pretty on the Inside was produced by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth.

In 1992, Courtney Love married Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana.

In 1993, Love and Eric Erlandson returned to work on a new Hole album, but with new members: bassist Kristen M. Pfaff and drummer Patty Schemel. In April 1994, Live Through This, the band's second album, was released by DGC Records. The album was critically acclaimed, and was considered one of the best of the year. Four days before its release, Cobain had been found dead in his home in Seattle, having committed suicide. And four months after his death, bassist Kristen M. Pfaff was found dead in an apartment in Seattle, having overdosed on cocaine. Two months later, Hole began a tour to promote Live Through This, with Melissa Auf Der Maur as bassist.

Hole released their third album in 1998. Celebrity Skin was positively received by critics. In May 2002, Love announced the end of the band. Years later, in 2004, she released her first solo album, America's Sweetheart.

In 2009, Courtney Love announced the return of the band. The group released the album Nobody's Daughter in 2010.
