One of the most significant bands to emerge in American alternative rock in the late 1990s, The White Stripes established themselves with their simple and vigorous rock, with garage rock, blues, punk and lo-fi as predominant styles in their music. "Hotel Yorba", "Fell in Love with a Girl", "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", "The Hardest Button To Button", "Seven Nation Army" and "Icky Thump" were some of the band's notable hits.
Formed in 1997 in Detroit by Jack White (songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, pianist) and Meg White (drums, percussion and backing vocals), the duo was also known for adopting the colors red, white and black in their appearance. Initially, Jack and Meg were introduced by the press as siblings. However, it was later discovered that the two were a couple until the year 2000, when they divorced.
The White Stripes' first album, released in 1999, was characterized by a more raw sound. The album features covers of the songs "Stop Breaking Down" (Robert Johnson) and "One More Cup of Coffee" (Bob Dylan).
In 2000, a banda released De Stijl. The album brought the duo greater popularity and featured the track "You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)". However, it was with White Blood Cells (2001) and Elephant (2003) that the White Stripes achieved significant success worldwide. Elephant was highly acclaimed by critics. "Seven Nation Army" and "The Hardest Button to Button" are the biggest hits from the band's fourth album.
The album, Get Behind Me Satan, released in 2005, won the 2006 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Icky Thump, the duo's sixth studio album, was released in 2007.
Jack White, who in 2005 had formed the side project The Raconteurs, in 2008 formed The Dead Weather, a group that also added Alison Mosshart from The Kills to its lineup.
In February 2011, the band released a statement announcing the end of its activities.
