With its catchy music, moving between garage rock and noise-pop, Be Your Own Pet collected enthusiastic reviews of its debut album, Be Your Own Pet, released in 2006.
Formed in 2003, in Nashville, Tennessee, by Jamin Orrall (drums), Jake Orrall (bass), Jemina Pearl Abegg (vocals) and Jonas Stein (guitar), the American group released in 2004 their first single, "Damn Damn Leash", which attracted the attention of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), leading the quartet to sign with his label, Ecastatic Peace!. Before the recording of the first album, Jake Orrall left the band, being replaced by Nathan Vasquez.
Be Your Own Pet, the first album, came out in March 2006. In September of that year, John Eatherley replaced Jamin Orrall on drums. In 2008, the group released Get Awkward, the second album, which like the first was produced by Steven McDonald (Redd Kross). The British version of this work, released by XL Recordings, has three more tracks, since in the United States the songs "Black Hole", "Becky" and "Blow Yr. Mind" were censored and consequently removed from the album.
The band announced its separation in August 2008. Vocalist Jemina Pearl released her first solo album, Break It Up, in 2009. Guitarist Jonas Stein went on to dedicate himself to his project called Turbo Fruits.
In 2022, Be Your Own Pet returned for some performances. From this return originated the album Mommy, released in August 2023.
