Soundgarden was one of the main groups of grunge, a movement that gave new life to rock in the early 90s and brought to the world bands like Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains and Nirvana.

The band was formed in 1984 in Seattle, Washington, by Hiro Yamamoto (bass), Kim Thayl (guitar), Chris Cornell (vocals) and Scott Sundquist (drums). In 1986, Scott Sundquist left the band, leaving his place to Matt Cameron.

In 1987, Soundgarden released their first EP, Screaming Life, on the then newly founded record label Sub Pop. Still on Sub Pop, the band released another EP, Fopp, in 1988. However, the group's first album, Ultramega OK, was released on the record label SST, in 1988.

The band then signed a contract with a major record label, A&M Records. In 1989, they released their second album, Louder Than Love. After the release ofLouder Than Love, bassist Yamamoto left the band and was replaced by Jason Everman, who had played with Nirvana. Jason Everman also did not stay long in the group, and Ben Shepperd took his place.

Badmotorfinger, released in 1991, and Superunknown in 1994, were the albums that made the group known worldwide for their "grunge metal", featuring the hits "Rusty Cage", "Jesus Christ Pose", "The Day I Tried to Live" and "Black Hole Sun".

In 1996, Soundgarden released their fifth studio album, Down on the Upside. This album did not have the same success as the previous two. And in 1997, the band disbanded.

In 2001, Chris Cornell joined forces with Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk (three musicians from Rage Against the Machine) to form Audioslave, a band that remained active until 2007.

In early 2010, Soundgarden announced their reunion. The band played a few shows, including a performance at Lollapalooza, and released a compilation album, Telephantasm. The band also began work on a new album, King Animal, which was released in November 2012.

On May 18, 2017, Chris Cornell was found dead in a Detroit hotel room, hours after performing with Soundgarden at the Fox Theatre. He was 52 years old, and his death was ruled a suicide by hanging.
