Formed in 1986 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Bettie Serveert established its classic lineup in 1990 with Canadian Carol Van Dijk (vocals), Peter Visser (guitar), Herman Bunskoeke (bass) and Berend Dubbe (drums). The group's music, characterized by slightly strident guitars and simple, melodic songs, was well received on the American alternative circuit in the early 1990s with the release of their debut album, Palomine, in 1992 on Matador Records.

Palomine received positive critical acclaim and produced two hits: "Tom Boy" and "Kid's Allright". "Tom Boy" later appeared on the soundtrack of the film "Amateur" (1994) by American director Hal Hartley. Also, with the success of the first album, Bettie Serveert toured with Dinosaur Jr., Superchunk, Buffalo Tom and Belly.

Matador Records also released the band's second and third albums in the United States, Lamprey (1995) and Dust Bunnies (1997), respectively. However, the band's albums released after Palomine did not have the same impact as their debut, even though the group produced some excellent works, such as Private Suit (2000), Log 22 (2003) and Attagirl (2004).

In 2010, Bettie Serveert released Pharmacy of Love, her ninth album. Oh, Mayhem!  was released in early 2013 and Damaged Good arrived in 2016,
