Mixing 1960s guitar pop with the dance beat that became a hallmark of British rock in the late 80s and early 90s, The Stone Roses became one of the most influential bands of that period, alongside Happy Mondays and The Charlatans, who became icons of the movement that became known as Madchester, in the city of Manchester, England.
The band was formed in 1985 in Manchester by Ian Brown (vocals), John Squire (guitar), Reni (drums), Andy Couzens (guitar) and Pete Garner (bass). At the beginning of their career, the band played a sound influenced by 60s classic rock and gothic music, with elements of heavy metal.
In 1987, guitarist Andy Couzens and bassist Pete Garner left the group. Mani joined the group on bass.
After a few singles, the first album, The Stone Roses, was released in 1989. The fusion of rock and acid house is the sound of this album, which brought some of the band's biggest hits: "I Wanna Be Adored", "She Bangs the Drums", "Elephant Stone" and "Made of Stone". The Stone Roses, the album, became one of the most revered albums of that time.
The second album, with new songs by the band, was only released in 1994. Second Coming was not well received by critics and due to friction between the band members during the album's tour, the band broke up.
After the end of the Stone Roses, Ian Brown pursued a solo career, John Squire formed a band called Seahorses and Mani went to play with Primal Scream.
