Beirut is the name of the band of Zach Condon, an American musician born on February 13, 1986 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Condon recorded an album — The Joys of Losing Wight — under the name The Real People when he was 15 years old. He studied at Santa Fe High School until he was 16 years old, when he traveled to Europe, where he came into contact with Balkan music, which became an influence on his work.
In 2006, Beirut released Gulag Orkestar, the first official album, which featured the collaboration of Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw), and was recorded in Albuquerque, in New Mexico. The album was critically acclaimed.
The second album, The Flying Club Cup, was leaked onto the internet on August 25, 2007 and was released on October 9, 2007. In 2009, the song "Elephant Gun" gained notoriety in Brazil, when it was the theme of the miniseries "Capitu" , shown by Rede Globo.
The third studio album, The Rip Tide, was released in August 2011. No No No, the fourth, arrived in 2015.
A new album, Gallipoli, was released in 2019. In 2023, Beirut released Hadsel.
