The story of Massive Attack began in 1987, when Adrian "Mushroom" Vowles, Grant "Daddy G." Marshall and Robert "3-D" del Naja formed the group in Bristol, England. The first single, Daydreaming, was released in 1990. The surprising debut album Blue Line, arrived in 1991. Fusing hip hop, soul and dance, the group is considered one of the precursors of trip-hop, a genre that would later become more popular with Tricky and Portishead.
The album Blue Lines features the magnificent voice of singer Shara Nelson, who sings on some tracks and, in particular, on the wonderful "Unfinished Sympathy". In 1994, the second album, Protection, was released with special guest vocals by Tracey Thorn, from Everything But the Girl.
For those who might think that the group's greatest inspiration was Blue Lines, Massive Attack's third album was released in 1998 and proved that the trio could still make beautiful electronic songs. Mezzanine stands out for its beautiful sound, especially when it features the voice of Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. As in the track "Teardrop".
In early 2003, the group returned with a new album, 100th Window, which featured only Del Naja (3-D) from its original line-up. 100th Window has Irish singer Sinead O'Connor among its collaborators. The group returned in 2010 with Heligoland.
