After the end of activities with Galaxie 500, Dean Wareham formed Luna in 1991. In its first formation, the band included bassist Justin Harwood and drummer Byron, who was soon replaced by Stanley Demeski, former drummer for the Feelies.
The band's music is identified with the indie pop and dream pop genres. Their first album was the excellent Lunapark from 1992. At this time the band became known as Luna². On the second album, Bewitched (1994), the band already had a fourth member, guitarist Sean Eden.
In 1995 the excellent album Penthouse arrived, featuring a version of "Bonnie and Clyde" (with the participation of Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab), a song by French singer Serge Gainsbourg. And also, Tom Verlaine's participation in two tracks, "Moon Palace" and "23 Minutes In Brussels". In 1996, drummer Stanley Demeski left the group, giving way to Lee Wall. And, the following year, the fourth album, Pup Tent, was released.
Days Of Our Nights, a 1999 work, features a version of the song "Sweet Child O'Mine" by Guns 'n Roses, and was Luna's first album released in Brazil. The Brazilian edition features two bonus tracks, "The Bad Vibe Merchant" and "Neon Lights", a song by Kraftwerk.
In 2000, Justin Harwood left the band and bassist Britta Phillips took his place. That same year, Luna released the album Live, which features 14 songs recorded live, with emphasis on "4th of July", one of Galaxie 500's classics.
In 2002, the band released their sixth studio album, RomanticaThe following year, Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips released an album titled L' Avventura, as a duo (Dean & Britta).
Luna announced its end in 2004, the year the band released its last studio album, Rendezvous. His last show was held at the Bowery Ballroom, in New York, on February 28, 2005.
Despite the announced end, the band returned in 2015 to perform some live performances. In 2017, the band released an album of covers, titled A Sentimental Education, and an EP, A Place Of Greater Safety, with six instrumental tracks.
