The New York indie pop band Cults was formed in 2010 by Brian Oblivion (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Madeline Follin (vocals). The duo started to attract attention in the same year, when they posted three songs (EP Cults 7) on the website Bandcamp, an online music store. "Go Outside", one of the tracks on this digital EP, became the band's first hit.

Being mentioned in publications like NME and Pitchfork, Cults, still in 2010, released "Go Outside" as a single and performed with other bands, including Best Coast.

In June 2011, the duo released their first album. Just titled Cults, the debut album was released by In the Name Of, a label founded by singer Lily Allen and supported by Sony Music.

Also in 2011, Cults collaborated with the group Superhuman Happiness on the version of the song "Um Canto De Afoxé para o Bloco Do Ilê" for the benefit album 'Red Hot + Rio 2', by the Red Hot Organization.

The band released Static, their second album, in October 2013. The third, Offering, came out in 2017. The band returned in 2020 with Host. In 2024, To the Ghosts arrived, a work inspired by artists such as Kraftwerk and The Crystals.
