indie folk

Indie folk is a musical genre that blends the aesthetics of indie rock—often incorporating experimental or lo-fi elements—with the sound of folk music, traditionally characterized by the use of acoustic instruments. The style emerged in the 1990s, with artists such as Elliott Smith, Beck, and Neutral Milk Hotel as its main exponents. Furthermore, Nick Drake's album Pink Moon (1972) is widely cited as a seminal influence on the genre's formation.

From the 2000s onwards, indie folk achieved greater popularity and refinement, consolidating names like Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Bright Eyes as fundamental references of the movement.
