Justin Vernon's solo indie folk project Bon Iver first appeared in early 2008, when the Jagjaguwar label released his debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago. This album had already been released months earlier, in 2007, by the singer-songwriter entirely independently.
The introspective songs on For Emma, Forever Ago were well regarded by the specialized press, giving Vernon a spotlight on the indie scene that he had not achieved with his previous band, DeYarmond Edison.
In June 2011, Bon Iver released his second album, simply titled Bon Iver. The album received critical acclaim. Flirting with electronic music, 22, A Million was released in 2016, followed by I, I in 2019. A new full-length work arrived in 2025, when the singer released Sable, Fable.
