Sofia Coppola

Anyone who follows the career of filmmaker Sofia Coppola knows that one of the main elements of her films is pop music. Her soundtracks always incorporate songs by artists who are revered in the alternative world, including Air in The Virgin Suicides (1999), My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain in Lost in Translation (2003), New Order and Siouxsie and the Banshees in Marie Antoinette (2006) and Phoenix in Somewhere (2010).

But before becoming a film director, she acted in music videos for Sonic Youth ("Mildred Pierce"), Madonna (“Deeper And Deeper”), The Black Crowes ("Sometimes Salvation"), The Chemical Brothers ("Elektrobank") and Phoenix ("Funky Squaredance). The latter, a low-budget video, was directed by her brother Roman.

Behind the camera, Sofia Coppola directed videos for The Flaming Lips ("This Here Giraffe"), Air ("Playground Love"), Kevin Shields ("City Girl"), The White Stripes ("I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself") and Phoenix ("Chloroform").

Our playlist brings together some of these records that show the director's immersion in the world of music videos.
