Danish band formed in 2001 by Sune Rose Wagner (guitar, vocals) and Sharin Foo (bass, vocals) in Copenhagen. During the Christmas period of 2001, The Raveonettes entered the studio to record their first work, the EP Whip It On. Adding guitarist Manoj Ramdas and drummer Jakob Hoyer, the band played one of their first shows at the SPOT festival, in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. At this festival, the band was discovered by Rolling Stone magazine editor David Fricke.
The Raveonettes' music is, as Sune Rose Wagner himself summed it up: "the primitive beat of the Cramps and the dark noise and feeling of the 80s Jesus & Mary Chain". The influence of Jesus & Mary Chain was evident in the eight songs on Whip It On, with the highlight being the track "Attack of the Ghost Riders".
In 2002, the band was invited to play in New York, at the famous CBGB. In the American city, the duo recorded some new songs with producer Richard Gottehrer, who had worked with Blondie, The Go-Go's, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, among others. Gottehrer was also the producer of the band's first album, Chain Gang of Love, released in 2003. The song "That Great Love Sound" was the big hit on that album.
The recording sessions for the next album began in 2004. And the result was the album Pretty in Black, released in 2005. This work features collaborations with Ronnie Spector (The Ronettes), Maureen Tucker (The Velvet Underground) and Martin Rev (Suicide). In November 2007, The Raveonettes returned with their third album, Lust Lust Lust. And, in 2009, In and Out of Control was released.
The band released their fifth studio album, Raven in the Grave, in 2011. Its follow-up, Observator, arrived in 2012. Titled Pe'ahi, the duo's seventh album was released in July 2014.
In 2016, the band launched the "RAVE-SOUND-OF-THE-MONTH" project, which consisted of releasing a single every month of the year. These songs were collected on the album 2016 Atomized, released in April 2017.
The duo returned with a new work in 2024, when they released a covers album entitled The Raveonettes Sing…, with interpretations of songs by Velvet Underground ("Venus in Furs"), Gram Parsons ("Return of the Grievous Angel"), Everly Brothers ("All I Have to Do Is Dream"), The Shangri-Las ("Leader of the Pack"), Cramps ("Goo Goo Muck"), Buddy Holly ("Wishing"), among others.
