Beach Fossils started in 2009 in Brooklyn, New York City, as a music project by Dustin Payseur, an admirer of music, poetry, arts and philosophy. Payseur recorded the band's first album alone, playing all the instruments. Self-titled, this debut album arrived in 2010 on the Captured Tracks label.
Influenced by dream pop and surf rock, the band's music gained popularity through blogs dedicated to the independent music scene. With the addition of other musicians, Beach Fossils toured the United States promoting their work.
In March 2011, Payseur teamed up with bassist John Pena to record an EP, What a Pleasure, which was released the same year.
Beach Fossils released their second album in February 2013, entitled Clash the Truth. Its follow-up, Somersault, came out in 2017. The band's fourth album, titled Bunny, was released in June 2023.
