In parallel with the career of his band Sonic Youth, guitarist and vocalist Thurston Moore was involved in several musical projects, such as film soundtracks, collaborations with other artists and released solo albums. The American musician recorded his first album in 1994, the time of his wife's pregnancy, Sonic Youth bassist and vocalist Kim Gordon. Titled Psychic Hearts, the debut album came out in 1995 on Geffen Records.

Trees Outside the Academy, his second solo album, released in 2007, features J Mascis, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth drummer) and violinist Samara Lubelski.

In 2011, Thurston Moore released Demolished Thought, an album produced by Beck. The Best Day, his fourth solo album, came out in October 2014, bringing on the cover a photo of his mother, taken around 1940. The musician appeared with a new album in 2017. Rock n Roll Consciousness received collaborations from Steve Shelley and Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine). Her next solo album, By the Fire, arrived in 2020.

In 2021, the artist released Screen Time, an instrumental and purely experimental album, which was followed by Flow Critical Lucidity, a work that features the collaboration of Lætitia Sadier from Stereolab on the track "Sans Limites".
