New Zealand electronic indie band The Naked and Famous was formed in 2008 in Auckland by Alisa Xayalith (vocals) and Thom Powers (instruments, vocals). Influenced by 1980s pop, more precisely by post-punk, the band initially released two EPs - This Machine and No Light, which had the collaboration of Aaron Short (engineer, producer), who became a member of the band.
In 2009, bassist David Beadle and drummer Jesse Wood joined the group. With their first album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, released in September 2010, The Naked and Famous entered the list "Sound of 2011" published by the BBC.
After a long world tour, the band settled in Los Angeles in mid-2012 to record a new album. Titled In Rolling Waves, the second album came out in September 2013. In 2016, The Naked and Famous released Simple Forms.
Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers returned in 2020 with a new album, entitled Recover.
