The La's was formed in 1983 in Liverpool by Mike Badger. The following year Lee Mavers joined the group. In its early years, the band went through several lineup changes, including the departure of Badger in 1986. Mavers (vocals, guitar) and John Power (bass, backing vocals) established themselves as the two main members.
In 1987, The La's signed to the Go! Discs and began work on their first album. Before the full work came the singles "Way Out" (1987), "There She Goes" (1988) and "Timeless Melody" (1990). In October 1990, The La's, her first and only studio album, was released.
The group's album was a modest commercial success and The La's was best remembered for the hit "There She Goes". In 1992, the band went on a hiatus with some sporadic comebacks. But without releasing new material.
Also in 1992, John Power formed the band Cast.
