Phoebe Rings is a band from Auckland, New Zealand, formed in 2019 by Crystal Choi. Despite the dream-pop label, the band's music has a more eclectic sound, mixing elements of folk, disco, bossa nova and city-pop, a subgenre of Japanese pop music that emerged in the late 1970s and was heavily influenced by Western pop music.
Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea, and moved to Auckland with her family when she was seven years old. A college-educated jazz pianist, she eventually moved into pop music. Choi has cited Stereolab and Broadcast as her favorite artists.
Phoebe Rings also features Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent (guitar, synthesizer), Benjamin Locke (bass) and Alex Freer (drums). The band released a self-titled EP in 2024 on the American label Carpark Records, preceding their debut album, Aseurai, scheduled for release in June 2025.
