In the 1990s, Allison Goldfrapp contributed her vocals to Orbital records and Tricky's acclaimed debut album Maxinquaye (1995). At the end of that decade, the singer/songwriter/keyboardist teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Will Gregory, forming the duo Goldfrapp.
Despite the style of his music having changed during his career, Goldfrapp has always been within electronic music, receiving labels such as electroclash, electropop, synthpop, trip hop and ambient, and exploring other genres such as folk and bossa nova, displaying a theatrical look.
Signed to Mute Records in 2000, the band released their debut album, Felt Mountain. The album surprised by the beautiful electronic songs, like "Lovely Head", "Pilots" and "Utopia". The album, which received positive reviews, was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Prize, won by PJ Harvey's Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.
Black Cherry (2003), the second album, distanced itself from the ambient sound that characterized Felt Mountain, showing more influences from synthpop, dance music and glam rock. In 2004, the duo toured as support act for Duran Duran.
Supernature, 2005's album, which featured the song "Ooh La La", followed the same dance style as Black Cherry. This third Goldfrapp album achieved good sales figures. It is estimated that over a million copies have been sold worldwide.
In 2008, the duo released Seventh Tree, an album with a calmer sound, with a predominance of ambient music. Two years later, the fifth album, Head First, came out. The band released his sixth studio album Tales of Us in September 2013. Its follow-up Silver Eye followed in 2017.
