Aretha Franklin

Rolling Stone published the list of the 100 best singers of all time online yesterday. Aretha Franklin, the soul queen, tops the top, followed by 99 pages with Ray Charles and Elvis also on the podium.

The long article, this week's cover of Rolling Stone, can be read on the magazine's website and shows, among other curiosities, who influenced the artists in question and the key themes in their careers. Each elected is accompanied by a text written by another middle name, many of them also at the top, such as Mary J Blige, last on the list, who says of Aretha "it is beautiful to see why she helped so many people with a lack of confidence in her abilities, me for example. I look at her and think, 'I need some of that. Whatever it is' ".

Billy Joel wrote about Ray Charles: "he synthesized the blues in a language that everyone could understand". Robert Plant (in 15th place) says of Elvis: "I know he wanted to express more. But what he did was make it possible for me, as a singer, to surpass myself".

In the top 10, Van Morrisson writes about 4th place Sam Cooke, followed by Jackson Browne about John Lennon (5th), Alicia Keys about Marvin Gaye (6th), Bono about Bob Dylan (7th), Booker T. Jones about Otis Redding (8th), Cee-Lo on Stevie Wonder (9th) and Iggy Pop on James Brown (10th).

The list was voted on by 179 experts, including journalists, musicians and producers such as Chris Martin, Liam Gallagher, James Hetfield, Yoko Ono or Ozzy Osbourne, among other names you can see here.

The names at the top are also accompanied by a suggestion of 10 songs to include in the playlist. See the complete list below:
