The Joy Formidable was formed in 2007 in Wales by Ritzy Bryan (vocals / guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass / backing vocals) and Justin Stahley (drums). Subsequently, the band settled in London, where drummer Justin Stahley was replaced by Matt Thomas. His music is influenced by shoegaze and noise rock. However, his style refers to the sounds of bands like The Primitives and Catatonia.
In 2008, the band performed at several British festivals, generating several recommendations from major publications, such as The Guardian. In January of the following year, The Joy Formidable released the mini-album A Balloon Called Moaning. Following, the group toured with Editors, Temper Trap and Passion Pit.
Titled The Big Roar, the trio's first album came out in January 2011 on Canvasback Records. In January 2013, The Joy Formidable released Wolf's Law, the second album. Following was Hitch, in 2016, and Aaarth, in 2018. In 2021 came Into the Blue, their fifth album.
