The American band The Dandy Warhols was formed in 1994, in the city of Portland (Oregon), with Courtney Taylor (vocals, guitar), Zia McCabe (keyboards), Peter Holmstrom (guitar) and Eric Hedford (drums). The name is a play on words with the name of pop artist Andy Warhol. His music features influences from David Bowie, Spaceman 3, My Bloody Valentine, Duran Duran, grunge, among other references.
Dandys Rule, OK!, the band's first album was released in 1996 on the Tim/Kerr label. The album had a modest repercussion. However, The Dandy Warhols began to attract attention at their shows, which led to the group signing a contract with Capitol Records in the same year.
However, the album that was supposed to be the band's debut on Capitol was rejected by the record company. Later, with the title Black Album, this work appeared on the internet. And, in 2004, the band released it through its website, along with a compilation album titled Come On Feel The Dandy Warhols.
Finally, in 1997, the first album was released by Capitol. ...Dandy Warhols Come Down was more successful in Europe. The album's highlights were the tracks "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth" and "Boys Better". And, during the tour for this album, drummer Eric Hedford left the band due to differences with Courtney Taylor. In his place came Brent DeBoer, Taylor's cousin. Around this same time, Taylor added another Taylor to her last name, becoming Courtney Taylor-Taylor.
In 2000, the band released Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, their third studio album, which gained great repercussion, both in North America and Europe. The song "Bohemian Like You" became a hit on American college radio.
The Dandy Warhols surprised their fans in 2003 with the album Welcome To The Monkey House. The album, which featured the collaboration of Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes, can be classified as techno pop. David Bowie, Evan Dando (Lemonheads) and Simon Le Bom (Duran Duran) were other artists who contributed to Welcome To The Monkey House, which, like Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, was commercially successful.
The album Odditorium or Warlords of Mars arrived in 2005. And, in 2008, The Dandy Warhols released their sixth studio album, ...Earth to the Dandy Warhols....
A new work, This Machine, was released in 2012, followed by Distortland, which was released in 2016. Why You So Crazy, the band's tenth studio album, was released in January 2019.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the group released Tafelmuzik Means More When You're Alone, an album with recordings made between 2010 and 2012, in the sessions for the albums ...Earth to the Dandy Warhols.... and This Machine.
Debbie Harry (Blondie), Slash (Guns N’ Roses) and Black Francis (Pixies) are the collaborators who appear on Rockmaker (2024), the band’s twelfth album.
