With the band's name taken from the title of an album released in 1970 by American folk singer Tim Bucley, Starsailor follows the same line of pop songs with acoustic interventions practiced by bands like Travis and Coldplay.
The band was formed in 2000 by James Walsh (vocals, guitar), James Stelfox (bass), Barry Westhead (keyboard) and Ben Byrne (drums). The following year, the quartet released their first album, Love Is Here, which featured the songs "Alcoholic", "Fever", "Poor Misguided Fool" and "Good Souls".
The second full-length work, Silence Is Easy, arrived in 2003. Subsequently, the band released On the Outside (2005) and All the Plans (2009). After this last album, the band went on a long hiatus, returning to tour in 2014. Their fifth album, All This Life, was released in 2017.
After a long break, Starsailor returned in 2024 with Where the Wild Things Gro, which, like All This Life, featured Embrace guitarist Richard McNamara in production.
