In the late 1980s, Pixies sowed influences across the globe in alternative pop music. From Nirvana to semi-known groups, everyone thanked a God for a day Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering formed in 1986 this essential band from the American city of Boston.
The first rehearsals took place in the garage of David Lovering's father (drums). Filipino Joey Santiago (guitar) and his friend Black Francis (vocal and guitar) named the band Pixies, something like little elves. Kim Deal (bass and vocals) was characterized as the delicate side of the band. Black's whispered and screamed vocals versus Kim's sweet vocals.
In the beginning, Pixies played in weird places around the American countryside. However, it didn't take long for the band to sign a contract with the English label 4AD. Through the cult label, in 1987, the group released Come On Pilgrim, a mini album.
Pixies music is basically punk rock, with influences from Latin music, surf music, noise rock and psychedelia. Black Francis, the band's mentor, lived for a time in Puerto Rico. Hence the explanation for the expressions and some letters of the group in Spanish. The bible, cinema and fiction were the main sources of inspiration for his songs.
The first album, Surfer Rosa (1988) and the second, Doolittle (1989), put Pixies as the most beloved band in the independent world. The English alternative print classified the band as the best in the world. The third album, Bossanova (1990), had a more pop sound. Highlight for the beautiful track "Velouria". And the fourth album came out in 1991. Entitled Trompe Le Monde, the album did not have the same good reception as the previous ones. But it is still an interesting job.
Surprisingly, in 1993, the band disbanded. Black Francis became Frank Black and pursued a solo career. Kim Deal continued to play with his side band The Breeders.
In 2004, Pixies, with its original formation, returned to the stage, including playing in Brazil, at the Curitiba Pop Festival. Later that year, the band released a song entitled "Bam Thwok”.
The band, who performed for the second time in Brazil in 2010 (SWU Festival), continued to tour regularly, but without releasing new material until 2013, when the quartet entered the studio with producer Gil Norton. However, during the recording sessions, Kim Deal left the band. Deal was replaced by bassist Kim Shattuck. In July 2013, the band released the song "Bagboy". In September of the same year the EP 'EP1' came out, released through the group's website. Two months later, in November, Shattuck was fired from the band. A few days later, Paz Lenchantin (Zwan, A Perfect Circle) was announced as the band's new bassist.
In January 2014, Pixies released another EP, entitled EP2, and then, in March, EP3 came out. The tracks for these three EPs were released in April of the same year on Indie Cindy, the band's first full album released since Trompe Le Monde.
Following, the band released the albums Head Carrier (2016), Beneath the Eyrie (2019) and Doggerel (2022). In early 2024, Lenchantin left the band. Emma Richardson of Band of Skulls took her place. Also in 2024, the band released The Night the Zombies Came, their ninth album.
