Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden formed MGMT in 2002 in Brooklyn, New York, while they were both studying at Wesleyan University. Initially, the band was known as Management. His first performances basically consisted of the use of synthesizers and pre-recorded vocals. Over time, the band's electro rock became more sophisticated, with the collaboration of supporting musicians.
After graduation, the band released the EP Time to Pretend (2005) on the small label Cantora Records. In 2006, MGMT signed with Columbia Records and began recording their first album with producer Dave Fridmann. Oracular Spectacular, the debut album, was released in October 2007 in digital format and in January 2008 on CD. The album received critical acclaim and sold over 500,000 copies in the US alone.
The duo performed in Brazil in October 2008, at the Tim Festival, in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Vitória. In 2009, the band returned to the studios with producer Sonic Boom to record their second album. Congratulations was released in April 2010.
Self-titled, the band's third album was released in September 2013. In 2018, MGMT released Little Dark Age. Loss of Life, their fifth album, arrived in 2024, featuring the collaboration of French singer Christine and the Queens on the track "Dancing in Babylon".
