Duo formed in 2013 in Los Angeles, California, by Cleo Tucker (vocals, guitar) and Harmony Tividad (vocals, bass), Girlpool had their music compared to the work of artists such as Liz Phair and Juliana Hatfield. However, the band cited artists such as Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Charli XCX as influences in the process of creating their work.
English label Wichita Recordings released in November 2014 its debut EP, simply titled Girlpool, which received positive reviews from critics. The following year, the duo released their debut album Before the World Was Big on the same label.
With drummer Miles Wintner in the lineup, the band released in May 2017 the album Powerplant. In 2019, Girlpool released the acclaimed What Chaos Is Imaginary.
