Despite the name, the band Of Montreal is from the American city of Athens, in the state of Georgia. Formed in 1996 by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Kevin Barnes, the band was one of the members of The Elephant 6 Recording Company (or simply Elephant 6), a collective of musicians from the American independent scene who began to share ideas, knowledge, goals and musicians. The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beulah and Elf Power are other bands that made up Elephant 6.

Of Montreal has always had constant changes in its lineup, but always led by Barnes. From 1997 onwards, the band released a series of singles, EPs and albums. Highlights include the albums The Gay Parade (1999) and Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (2007).

In 2010, the band released their tenth studio album, False Priest. Then, in 2012, Paralytic Stalks arrived. The following year, Lousy with Sylvianbriar was released, followed by the 2015 album Aureate Gloom. Their fourteenth studio album, Innocence Reaches, was released in 2016.

The band released the album White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood in 2018, which Barnes stated was influenced by the "extended dance mixes" of the 1980s. In January 2020, the band returned with UR FUN, followed by Freewave Lucifer F<ck F^ck F>ck (2022) and Lady on the Cusp (2024).
