Speedy Ortiz emerged in 2011 as a solo project by singer/songwriter/guitarist Sadie Dupuis. The following year, the project expanded its lineup with the addition of bassist Darl Ferm, drummer Mike Falcone and guitarist Matt Robidoux.
In June 2012, the band released the EP Sports. Well received by critics, the first album, Major Arcana, arrived on the Carpark Records label in July 2013.
Speedy Ortiz's music was often compared to independent rock from the early 1990s, more precisely to the work of artists such as Pavement, Breeders, Bettie Serveert and Liz Phair.
The band released an EP titled Real Hair in February 2014. That same year, guitarist Matt Robidoux was replaced by Devin McKnight. The following year, the band released the album Foil Deer. A new studio album, titled Twerp Verse, came out in 2018.
In 2023, the band released Rabbit Rabbit.
