English band Chapterhouse was formed in 1987 in Reading, Berkshire, by Andrew Sherriff (vocals/guitar), Stephen Patman (vocals/guitar), Simon Rowe (guitar), Jon Curtis (bass) and Ashley Bates (bass). Later, Curtis left the group and bassist Russell Barrett took his place.
Initially, the band flirted with space rock under the influence of Spacemen 3. However, when Whirlpool, the first album, arrived, the quintet was already associated with Shoegaze, a movement that had Slowdive, Lush, Ride and My Bloody Valentine, as some of the main exponents.
Whirlpool was released in 1991 on the Dedicated Records label. The album brought the single "Pearl", a song that features vocals from Rachel Goswell of Slowdive.
Chapterhouse returned in 1993 with their second and final album, Blood Music. In this work, the band flirts with rave-rock, more precisely with the sounds of the Madchester movement.
The group disbanded in 1994. Over the next few years, the band played a few sporadic gigs.
