Zola Jesus is the stage name of American singer and songwriter Nika Roza Danilova. Born April 11, 1989 in Phoenix, Arizona but raised in Merrill, Wisconsin, she studied opera singing for ten years. Inspired by the work of artists such as Throbbing Gristle, Lydia Lunch and Swans, Nika Roza Danilova, she made her first home recordings using keyboards, electronic drums and any object that served as a musical instrument.
Zola Jesus officially released his first works in 2008, when the singles "Poor Sons" and "Soeur Sewer" came out. In the following year, it was much commented on blogs dedicated to underground music. Also in 2009, her first album, The Spoils, came out on Sacred Bones Records and the EP Tsar Bomba.
Zola Jesus' music combines elements from diverse genres such as industrial music, synthpop, classical, electronic, gothic and experimental rock. Florence Welch, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins) are some of the references pointed out by critics in the work of Nika Roza Danilova.
In 2010, she toured with Fever Ray and The XX. That same year came the second studio album, entitled Stridulum II, and the Eps Stridulum and Valusia. The following year, she released her third album, Conatus.
Versions, the American artist's fourth album, arrived in August 2013. The following year, she released Taiga. A new studio album Okovi was released in 2017. She returned in 2022 with Arkhon.
