The The

The The is an English band formed in 1979 by Matt Johnson, the only constant member of the group. Emerging during the New Wave period, the group's music is difficult to classify, bringing together elements of synthpop and experimental pop.

In 1981, Matt Johnson released the album Burning Blue Soul under his own name. This album was re-released in 1993, and was credited to The The. The acclaimed Soul Mining, the band's first official album, arrived in 1983. The album featured "This Is the Day" and "Uncertain Smile", two of the band's biggest hits. This was followed by Infected (1986) and  Mind Bomb (1989). The latter featured guitarist Johnny Marr (Smiths) in the group's lineup.

In 1993, The The released their fourth studio album, entitled Dusk. "Love Is Stronger than Death", "Dogs of Lust" and "Slow Emotion Replay" were the tracks that stood out on this work.

Hanky Panky, an album released in 1995 by the group, consists only of versions of songs by American country singer Hank Williams. In 2000, the group released NakedSelf, an album that was well received by critics. Over the following years, the band dedicated itself to working on soundtracks. A new studio album arrived in 2024, when Ensoulment was released.
