The formation of the English band The Mighty Lemon Drops (initially called the Sherbert Monsters) was defined in 1985 with Paul Marsh (vocals), David Newton (guitar), Tony Linehan (bass) and Keith Rowley (drums). In December of that year, the quartet released the single "Like an Angel", which entered the UK Independent Singles Chart. The inclusion of the track "Happy Head" on the legendary C-86 cassette released by NME adds to the buzz around the group's name, which has drawn attention to the strong influence of Echo & The Bunnymen on their work. Dave and Tony were the group's two main songwriters.

In its early years, the band released the albums Happy Head (1986), World Without End (1988) and Laughter (1989). World Without End features the hit "Inside Out". During the recording sessions for Laughter, Tony Linehan left the band and was replaced by Marcus Williams.

The Mighty Lemon Drops released two more studio albums, Sound ... Say Goodbye to Your Standards (1991) and Ricochet (1992). However, they failed to move audiences and critics. The band disbanded in 1992.
