American indie pop band The Decemberists was formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon. Led by vocalist/guitarist Colin Meloy, the band, whose music is influenced by styles such as progressive rock and folk, uses unique instruments such as the accordion, melodica, acoustic bass and xylophone, and finds similarities in groups such as Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, Neutral Milk Hotel and Iron & Wine.
