The music of Australian band Amyl and the Sniffers combines elements of genres that were established in the 1970s, such as proto-punk, punk and hard rock, and takes as references artists such as The Stooges, The Damned, AC/DC and Motörhead. Vocalist Amy Taylor has cited Ceremony, Sleaford Mods and Cardi B among her influences.
The Melbourne quartet emerged in the second half of the 2010s, revitalizing the punk tradition in their early work and in their energetic and visually chaotic performances. Amy Taylor (vocals), Declan Mehrtens (guitar), Gus Romer (bass) and Bryce Wilson (drums) released their self-titled debut album in 2019, on the Australian label Flightless and the English label Rough Trade Records. The album won the award for Best Rock Album at the ARIA Music Awards.
Prior to their debut full-length work, Amyl and the Sniffers had released the EPs Giddy Up (2016) and Big Attraction (2017). With their name already known outside their country, the band released Comfort to Me in 2021 and Cartoon Darkness in 2024.
