Canadian multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco released his first independent works under the pseudonym Makeout Videotape. In 2012, already as Mac DeMarco, he released the EP Rock and Roll Night Club and the full album 2, on the American label Captured Tracks.

He has previously mentioned Weezer, Shuggie Otis, Steely Dan and Jonathan Richman as his favorite artists. His style, he labeled as "jazz jizz".

In April 2014, the musician released Salad Days, his second album. In the previous month, Mac DeMarco performed in Brazil, in the cities of São Paulo and Porto Alegre. A new album, This Old Dog, was released in 2017. Here Comes the Cowboy, their fourth album, arrived in 2019. Five Easy Hot Dogs, instrumental album, was released in 2023.
